A Dance on N¨¹shu: Women of Language, the Language of Women

N¨¹shu, literally "female writing", is a unique written language that has been developed and used exclusively over generations by women in the Jiangyong county, Hunan province. At a time when this 400-year-old secret language is on the brink of extinction, Helen Lai tells HerStory in another, altogether different, vocabulary.

In her much-acclaimed Loose Pages From A Woman's Diary, Lai delves into women's fantasies, revealing feelings that are at once delicate and violent. Inspired by the alluringly embroidered N¨¹shu missives, as well as the shimmering prose of two contemporary Hong Kong female writers, Xi Xi and Wong Bik-wan, HerStory may prove to be Lai's magnum opus on the subject of women. Three languages are at play here: ancient N¨¹shu, modern womanhood, both infused and interpreted by Lai in an excursion between the secret and overt, between text and non-text, all through the perceptive artistry of CCDC dancers.
