Very Dance! - All About Dance and Dancers

Veteran choreographer Helen Lai never ceases to surprise and delight the audience with her exceptional creations over the past 30 years. Bringing together CCDC dancers and a design team comprised of ex-dancers, Very Dance! reveals the laughter and tears of dancers as performers and as people.

Helen Lai

Helen Lai began her ballet training in Hong Kong. She then went to study at the London School of Contemporary Dance. After returning to Hong Kong, she worked as the Assistant Dance Director for Rediffusion Television. Her work was presented at Hong Kong City Hall in 1977 and 1978. Lai joined CCDC in 1979 and became its Artistic Director from 1985 to 89.

Lai was awarded “Choreographer of the Year” from the Hong Kong Artists’ Guild in 1990, and “Badge of Honour” from the Queen of the United Kingdom in 1995. Revolutionary Pekinese Opera (Millennium Mix) has been featured in Karmiel Dance Festival in Israel and the Festival of Cultures, Contemporary Art and Culture of Hong Kong, China in Munich 1997. Lai was awarded the Hong Kong Dance Alliance Dance Awards in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2008 for her choreography. Nine Songs made its UK debut in February 2000 and was subsequently invited to Lyon Biennial Dance Festival in the same year. In 2000, Lai was awarded the “Medal of Honour” by the Hong Kong SAR Government. In 2002, Lai was awarded the “Distinguished Achievement Award” from the Hong Kong Dance Alliance. In 2003, she received the “Award for Arts Achievement (Dance)” from The Hong Kong Arts Development Council. In July 2004, Lai received the Honorary Fellowship from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Lai is currently the Resident Choreographer of CCDC.

 

City Contemporary Dance Company (Hong Kong)

Through the leadership of its Founder and Artistic Director, Willy Tsao, City Contemporary Dance Company has inspired and elated audiences in Hong Kong and around the world with superb modern dance performances over the past 30 years. Founded in 1979, CCDC has presented over 200 original works to critical acclaim, including productions by leading choreographers such as Helen Lai, Mui Cheuk-yin, Pun Siu-fai, Yuri Ng and Tsao himself, and innovative collaborations with outstanding artists from other media.

CCDC’s renown in reflecting the vigour and creativity of Hong Kong’s vibrant, multifaceted contemporary culture has increased its audience to over 50,000 annually and earned it 174 overseas performances at the world’s foremost dance stages and festivals in over 30 major cities including New York, Montreal, London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Lyon, Sydney, Tokyo, Seoul, Busan, Singapore, Manila, Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, Munich, Stuttgart, Mumbai, Delhi, Brisbane, Copenhagen, Prague, Karmiel (Israel), St. Petersburg (Moscow), Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and San Francisco.

CCDC’s commitment to education and development has seen it produce over 40 outreach performances annually, as well as offer highly popular dance courses to over 40,000 students each year. It also helps organise China’s annual Guangdong Modern Dance Festival, and since 1998 has provided administrative and technical support to budding Hong Kong and mainland artists through its China Dance Development Programme. The 2004 opening of the CCDC Dance Centre has given young artists, students, and the community at large an exciting new arena for modern dance.
