Jumping Frames International Dance Video Showcase: Beijing
A Showcase of Masterpieces And Award-winning Dance Videos From Around The World

Dance video, a thriving medium in Europe and America, is a unique genre that encompasses the aesthetics of both dance and video. Presented by Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) since 2004, the biennial Jumping Frames Dance Video Festival establishes a platform for cultural exchange and promotes this art form through commissions, competitions, showcases and discussions. It is the only dance video festival in Asia that features both commissioned works and works selected from competition. Lecture
1.   Topic(Pre-Festival Lecture): Modern Dance in China
Venue: NCPA Press Conference Room
Date: April 25, 2010  2:00-3:30pm
Lecturer:Willy Tsao
A conversation with TimeOut Beijing’s Classical and Performance Editor, Nancy Pelligrini.

What is Modern Dance? What is Chinese Modern Dance? From Empress Cixi-Yu Rongling of the Qing Dynasty to Wu Xiaobang and Dai Ailian who danced for the revolution, how did these historical figures interpret the meaning and spirit of Modern Dance?
In September 1987, the first Modern Dance class, Guangdong Modern Dance Experimental Class, was established. This represented the first official Modern Dance curriculum in China and was enveloped as part of dance education in China. Now, over 20 years later, what is the current situation for the development and creation of Modern Dance in China?
In the 21st century, a century in which technology is rapidly developing, what kind of opportunities and challenges will Modern Dance face?
Willy Tsao, a pioneer of Modern Dance in China, will give a lecture evoking his exclusive firsthand experience.

Willy Tsao
Willy Tsao has been instrumental to the development of the modern dance in China. Tsao was born and educated in Hong Kong and received his modern dance training in the U.S. from 1973 to 1977. In 1979 he graduated from the University of Hong Kong with an MBA degree, and established the Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company. He helped to set up the Guangdong Modern Dance Company, the first professional modern dance company in Mainland China, and was its Artistic Director from 1992 to 1998. He was invited to be the artistic director of the Beijing Modern Dance Company in 1999. In September 2005, he left the Beijing Modern Dance Company and set up the BeijingDance / LDTX. In addition to directing three dance companies, Tsao founded two annual international dance festivals in Beijing and Guangdong.
Tsao’s choreographic works vary in style and have been presented throughout the world. In July 1999, he was awarded the “Bronze Bauhinia Star” by the Hong Kong SAR government for his significant contribution to the development of local arts.

2. A Lecture with five Scottish Artists
Date: May 8,2010  2:00pm-4:30pm
Venue: NCPA Press Conference Room
Lecturer: Tony Mills \ Claire Pencak \ Lindsay John \ Ian Spink \ Anna Krzystek
On May 8th, China-UK Connections through Culture, in collaboration with BeijingDance / LDTX, is bringing 5 modern dance artists from Scotland to speak about their work. The artists attending are Tony Mills, Claire Pencak, Lindsay John, Ian Spink and Anna Krzystek, all of whom have practiced modern dance for years and have performed with many different dance companies. In this two-hour lecture, the artists will use visual support and live demonstration to talk about their experience with dance---including previous works, stage installation and choreographic methods.

Tony Mills
Tony Mills is a founder member of Edinburgh based Random Aspekts BBoy crew and Cypher Dance and hails from the Orkney Isles. Tony has his own company, Room 2 Manoeuvre, and created and performed a 45 min solo entitled "Watch iT!" at Dance Base for the Fringe festival 2009. Room 2 Manoeuvre has commissioned Edinburgh based Australian choreographer Janis Claxton for the development of a new solo in 2010.

Claire Pencak
Claire Pencak trained in ballet and modern dance techniques and has developed her practice under the influence of dance practitioners such as Matthew Hawkins (UK), Russell Dumas (Australia) & Françoise and Dominique Dupuy (France).
Claire teaches professional, student and community dancers and in recent years has been a guest teacher at the Esçola Superior de Dança in Lisbon and the Scottish School for Contemporary Dance, Dundee.

Lindsay John
Lindsay john is a Dance Performance Artist, Sculptor and Lecturer based in Glasgow, Scotland. Though initially trained in the Fine Arts, he has actively pursued new directions in dance combining aspects of sculpture, costume / body appendage and installation into his own performance works. Since 1987 his primary area of research has been in Butoh, the modern Japanese dance approach from which he derives courage and direction in his work. For this he has travelled twice to Japan both to study and to perform on invitation.

Ian Spink
Ian trained at the Australian Ballet School and danced and choreographed with The Australian Ballet, Australian Dance Theatre and the Dance Company of New South Wales prior to moving to London in 1977.
Ian’s freelance work has included directing (Citizens Theatre, Scottish Opera) choreography and movement directing (Rambert, ENO, RSC, RNT and Opera North) as well as leading creative workshops. He is a dance Advisor for the Scottish Arts Council.
Ian has recently presented ‘3 of 26 Solos’ at the POOL performance in Dundee and choreographed Petrushka for Scottish Ballet, which premiered at the Edinburgh International Festival in September 2009.

Anna Krzystek
Born in London, Glasgow-based choreographer and performer Anna Krzystek trained at Merce Cunningham Dance Studios and extensively in Klein Mahler technique under the guidance of Barbara Mahler in New York.
Anna has worked independently with numerous choreographers and has been pursuing her own choreographic process since 1997.
Recently Anna has been awarded the Choreographic Fellowship Award from the Scottish Arts Council. The fellowship marks a year-long research period into the making of Figure This.  Figure This will be the third in a series of solo pieces following Test and Still.
‘I am drawn to concepts relating to time, space and the human condition,’ she says. ‘By placing the human being under intense physical and psychological scrutiny, I look to challenge relationships between performer and viewer, inviting audiences to intellectually participate in the work, and developing a unique combination of clear physical abstraction and dramatic intention.’
